Shows To Raise Money For Park

BEDFORD - Natasha Johns is determined to have the new playground at Englewood School finished before classes start next fall. She's making calls asking for donations, writing grant applications and watching the mailbox, and her latest effort to raise funds involves a weekend of music.“We really hope families take advantage of this,” Johns said, referring to a rock ‘n' roll show April 7 and a gospel concert on April 8. Both shows will take place in the convention center building on the northwest corner of the downtown square, formerly the Lawrence County Museum.“The kids really love Rusty Bladen and the other groups, but they don't get an opportunity to see them because they usually play in bars,” Johns said.Johns and her group of volunteers orchestrating the event will have concessions on hand, which they are still hoping will be donated from within the community. Already several businesses have offered money, goods and services to help the playground come to fruition. So far, about $30,000 has been collected through donations and grants, which leaves about the same amount left to raise.

PCD Latest Collections

Covering thirteen years of musical ministry, this two-disc collection from Phillips, Craig & Dean is a virtual soundtrack for vertical worship. These leadership roles have accounted for the unpretentious lyrical content of their songs, which seek to strengthen the church with hope and encouragement. History has proven their knack for developing church-ready music to assist the Christian in communicating with the Creator. Together they create crisp harmonies, with music that plays to pop sensibilities intermingled with Gospel influences. Read More

Churches Try Redeeming Rap

As he takes the stage, wearing baggy jeans, an oversize basketball jersey and a massive gold chain, Sahaan McKelvey could be any rapper, layin' it down for any crowd in any of a dozen concerts happening in Portland that night. But he's not and they're not and it isn't.
McKelvey is a youth pastor. His crowd is 100 teenagers, parents, grandparents and young families, and this is RepChrist, a night of holy hip-hop at Irvington Covenant Church in Northeast Portland.
McKelvey and his backup, a five-piece band, a deejay and background singers, fill the church sanctuary with the unrelenting urgency of hip-hop that has found salvation not in drugs, not in violence, not in the degradation of women, but in the message of Jesus Christ. Here's a sample:
"No condemnation, I'm free, I'm free.
"I dance and sing in liberty.
"I don't care what they say about me,
" 'Cause I have a right to be free."

Kirk Turns A New Page

In 1993, a new voice burst onto the gospel music scene.
I sing because I'm happy,I sing because I'm freeThe song, Why We Sing, spent 100 weeks on the Billboard gospel chart and solidified Kirk Franklin's place among the gospel elite. Turns out, while he was writing songs about being free, Franklin was the one who needed freeing. Until six years ago, this chart-topping, Grammy-winning minister of music was a porn addict.
I hope this is a really new page and a lesson for others still in the realm of porn addiction.

Jaci Velasquez Divorced

Less than two years after her 2003 wedding made the news, Christian/Latin music superstar Jaci Velasquez's marriage has ended in divorce.
Velasquez and Indiana native Darren Potuck were married on August 16, 2003, in Franklin, Tennessee. But their marriage later "took a turn," Velasquez told Christian Music Today in an exclusive statement.
"When my husband and I started out as newlyweds, we were like all newlyweds, wanting that dream marriage," Velasquez said. "Somehow, things took a turn and we have ended up in divorce."
Velasquez did not elaborate on the reasons for the divorce.
A Word Records spokesman said Velasquez and Potuck had worked to save their marriage, and Velasquez alluded to that in her statement.

Gospel Singers And Gays

Gospel singerpersonal experience that God offers an exit for people who don't want to be gay.
The Grammy Award-winning singer, who pastors a church in New York, told Religion and Ethics Newsweekly that after being molested as a boy his "desires were toward men."
But he said, "God gave me the wherewithal to get out of that and find out who I really am."
"That's how the change took place, the different scriptures in the Bible, his will being shown through the scriptures," McClurkin said. "God walked me through it."
McClurkin said that he tells others "who are looking for that exit" that God can "do it for them."
So my fellow readers, with this you can tear the kingdom down by being an example to unbelievers and gays.

Hezekiah Gay Affair Story False

The people of musicnewsweekly.com deeply apologized to the family, friends, congregation and Pastor Hezekiah Walker, for allowing themselves to be pawns of a totally false story that was confirmed by mediatakeout.com. As the founder, I am deeply hurt of the lack of integrity and respect. I have allowed to come through Music News Weekly against Pastor Walker. I was given the opportunity to discuss this matter directly with Pastor Walker and offer my sincere apologies for allowing such a terrible thing to take place. Read More If an America media can make such a blunder, i wonder what our fellow Nigerians would do to our pastors. This man just won a grammy and few medias commented on his performance but if for a gay story the whole world would hear in a flash. we need to grow up.
